Seamless Cedar Lake 2-story Addition

Story:

Before: This home was loved for the traditional details and great location but the family was in need of more space and a private retreat for Mom and Dad.

After: A brand new 2-story addition to the rear of the home honors many traditional design elements inside and out while incorporating modern amenities and space to spread out.

Highlights Main Floor:

  • The 2-story sunporch was removed and the rear wall of the home was pushed back to create space for a new kitchen and dining room on the main floor
  • The original kitchen transformed into a back hallway complete with powder room, pantry storage, and coat closet
  • The dining room connects to the backyard with a Marvin Ultimate sliding door, this oversized patio door is mirrored by the large doorway into the original living room which no longer feels dark and closed off
  • New windows on all three walls allow natural light to flood the kitchen and dining room
  • A double wall oven and generous kitchen island provides ample space to satisfy the family baker, while the walk-in pantry keep the baking supplies out of sight
  • Traditional elements throughout the home were honored and replicated, as seen in the woodworking details, built-in cabinetry, door hardware, and the custom made leaded glass panels on the den doors which match the existing windows

Highlights Second-Floor:

  • The staircase to the second-floor was rebuilt and the original railing was seamlessly extended
  • Above the new kitchen and dining room an owner’s suite, complete with spacious bathroom and walk-in closet, and laundry room were added
  • A custom window was built  for the bedroom to incorporate an original leaded glass window that was removed from the original rear wall of the home
  •  The bright white bathroom is accented with a bold blue vanity which ties back to the blue walls in the bedroom
  • A new laundry room is conveniently located near all of the bedrooms. Another bold splash of color keeps the laundry room from feeling sterile

Highlights Exterior:

  • New siding to match the size and profile of the homes existing siding was installed on the addition, then the entire house was painted to blend the old with the new. New window and door trims were matched to existing trims to continue the effect of blending the addition
  • The kitchen sink window bump-out and the dining room built-in buffet bump-out add character to the exterior facades
  • The sliding door exits from the dining room onto a set of steps leading to the patio and fenced in backyard
