Bright Tangletown Basement Retreat

Story:

Before: A growing family was looking to increase the useable space in their home and to add a guest room for visiting family members. After addressing minor structural issues and relocating the homes mechanical systems, the once unfinished basement became a perfect solution.

After: A bright and airy retreat awaits guests with their own bedroom and nearby powder bath. Meanwhile the family enjoys spreading out in the additional living space along with using the updated laundry and mechanical room.

Highlights:

  • A light monochromatic color scheme keeps the basement bright and creates the illusion of height despite shorter ceilings
  • The engineered wood floor add a natural warmth to all of the rooms
  • Moving the homes mechanicals to the back corner allows the base of the stairs to open into the living area, maximizing the space
  • Hiding beams and posts with strategic wall placement helps to keep an open feel
  • A unique spindle wall partition at the base of the stairs eliminates the need for traditional a wall
  • Leaving the original exposed brick chimney with clean out doors adds character and texture to the long wall of the living room
  • The small powder room is brought to life with colorful wallpaper and faux paneling details
  • Glass paneled doors on the bedroom allow light to travel freely through the entire basement
  • Matching the trim details, such as baseboards and door casings, to the main floor creates a sense of continuity thought the home
