Architectural Attic Renovation

Story:

Before: A dark, cramped, half finished space was underused by the homeowners and dreaded by overnight guests. Low ceilings, poor lighting, and lack of air flow prevented this attic from living up to its full potential.

After: A cozy third floor with ample natural light gives this family a space for the kids to hang out and a place where guests actually enjoy staying overnight.

Highlights:

  • Monochromatic white walls, ceilings, and moldings create the illusion of more space while also helping reflect and amplify the natural light
  • The angles from the boxed in beams and recessed ceiling tray create interesting geometric shadows that draw the eye up
  • Existing wood floors were patched and refinished to bring warmth and character to the attic
  • The railing at the top of the stairs is removable for bringing furniture pieces up and down
  • A custom entertainment unit is recessed into the wall to free up floor space
  • New casement windows on both ends of the attic allows better airflow and a cooling cross breeze
  • A separate HVAC system is hidden in a closet for air conditioning and heat to the attic only
  • The stair treads were refinished and a carpet runner was added for extra safety on the steps
  • The original door at the base of the stairs remains to give guests privacy
